SOCSO COMPOUND NOTICES

KUANTAN: Socso has issued 579 compound notices totalling RM365,500 to errant employers nationwide for failing to contribute to the organisation.

Its deputy chief executive Aleyes Meh said it had also conducted checks on 5,857 employers during its Ops Kesan campaign, which began on March 7.

“Workers must be made aware of their rights while employers must do the right thing if there are mishaps or accidents at their workplaces.

“Socso has a variety of products for the benefit of workers and their families,” he told reporters after presenting Socso payments totalling
RM105,597.72 to 12 recipients at Wisma Perkeso here yesterday.

Aleyes said the campaign, which was first launched in 2009, would be carried out from time to time to enhance public awareness of the importance of
making Socso contributions.

State Socso deputy director Rosmasita Mohamad said it issued 126 compounds totalling RM83,500 in the first four days of the campaign.

She said among those found to have violated the law was a company that had been operating for more than 10 years.

Rosmasita said most companies claimed that they were unaware of the law requiring them to contribute to Socso.

“The excuses are so lame. It does not make sense for someone not to know about the regulation if the company has been operating for 10 years.

“There are also companies who only registered with Socso after their workers had an accident because it would involve medical and other costs,”
she said, adding that most errant employers were from the small and medium-sized industries.

Earlier, in her speech, Rosmasita reminded the public that Socso had not appointed any agents or middle man to act as a go-between for those applying
for Socso benefits.

“Applicants can go directly to Socso offices. The services are free while illegal agents will charge a fee of about RM1,000 and above,” added
Rosmasita.
